A church in South Berkeley, California is taking a stand against the long history of redlining and displacement in the community by building an affordable housing development on the property. Co-developers Community Housing Development Corporation of North Richmond (CHDC) and St. Paul African Episcopal Methodist Church of Berkeley and community members celebrated the groundbreaking of St. Paul Terrace with speakers and a lively praise dance.
St. Paul Terrace will replace an annex building and parking lot on the church's site with 50 apartments, 49 of which will house individuals and families earning less than 60% of the area median income, including 13 units set aside for seniors at risk or experiencing homelessness. These apartments will not only add more much-needed affordable housing into this neighborhood, it will also infuse life back into an area that once was the cornerstone for Black culture and commerce.
