Safe, affordable housing has been linked with improving health, education and economic outcomes for families. It can connect people to services and resources that include employment, education, entertainment, retail and health facilities. When rent is affordable, families are able to save more money and invest in other basic needs such as food, transportation and quality day-care services.

The gap between availability and the need for affordable housing continues to grow. Families have been turning to shelters because of the lack of housing stock in some communities.
