LISC

Helping Neighbors Build Communities

Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) is the reason that NEF, Inc. exists today. The New York-based intermediary created NEF, Inc. as its tax-credit syndication arm in 1987 in an effort to deliver additional capital to CDCs focused on affordable housing development.

No one knew then what impact tax credits would have, or whether or not they would survive from one year to the next. The credits were just another tool at the disposal of the community development movement, and NEF, Inc. was the means by which those investments could be made.

While LISC grew into the preeminent community development intermediary in the country, NEF, Inc. became the nation’s largest nonprofit syndicator of low-income housing tax credits. Together, we have developed partnerships with local community organizations, for-profit developers, institutional investors, foundations and government agencies that have made a measurable difference in distressed urban neighborhoods and underserved rural areas. Together, LISC and NEF, Inc. are helping neighbors build communities.

Featured Project: Verne Barry Place

Verne Barry Place

Verne Barry Place is a creative example of building preservation and adaptation in Grand Rapids, Mich., designed to meet the needs of some of the area’s lowest-income residents. NEF invested $13.5 million on behalf of eight investors to fund this impressive "green" development.

The 116-unit supportive housing project, developed by Dwelling Place, Inc., features seven commercial spaces and serves homeless residents, including veterans.
